78 Years Agone Today: What Other Reserves Accept We?
That was Churchill's query to Air Vice Marshal Keith Park on the penultimate 24-hour interval of the Battle of Britain.
On fifteen September 1940 the Germans attempted to pull the Royal Air Force into a battle of annihilation amongst their largest together with most concentrated daylight fix on against London. They sent 620 fighters together with 500 bombers against the R.A.F's 660 fighters.
September 15, 1940 was equally good the 24-hour interval that Churchill had decided on to see the headquarters of Sir Keith Park, commander of Fighter Command's xi Group which protected southeast England i.e. where the German's were headed.
At 2:35, Churchill, who had been watching the plotting tabular array where the waves of bombers coming inwards since 10:10 were depicted, noticed that all the blood-red low-cal bulbs that denoted RAF fighter squadrons inwards activity were lit together with asked the famous question, "What other reserves bring we?"
Park's reply:
"There are none."

Weather: fine
Fighter Command Serviceable Aircraft equally at 0900 hours:
Blenheim – 47
Spitfire – 192
Hurricane – 389
Defiant – 24

Total – 660
Weather wise this was lastly the chance the Luftwaffe had been waiting for. Accordingly, inwards mid-morning the radar along the southward coast picked upward bear witness of majority raids which duly appeared over southern England heading for London. All 3 groups, 10, xi together with 12 inwards southern England at nowadays played their component subdivision inwards intercepting the incoming armada. There were no less than xxx squadrons who were engaged inwards intercepting together with contesting the progress of this vast fleet of High German bombers. Furthermore, the latter was accompanied past times a really rigid strength of Me109s. Naturally, despite the aerial battles which developed, substantial harm was done to London.
